A Fairy tale – Oqaluttualiaq

Once upon a time there was a region – well practically a small State – with enormous challenges. It’s primary business sectors were mining, timber, fishery and some agriculture. But structural changes around the Globe made all the sectors have a poor outlook. For a small community this was a terrible development – and thus a visionary man from the local business society, let’s call him Frank, gathered a bunch of people for food and wine. The crowd he gathered was a mixed crowd. Some from the business sector, some from Public Administration and some from the University/Educational system. The main criteria for being part of the group was to be someone who acts – not just talks. So you can imagine that this was a pretty competent group of people with power to move and shake things. The crowd met over more than half a year and discussed the challenges for their region and came up with a plan for the future. The region should embark on a new adventure with heavy investments – both cash and competence building – in creating a good business and educational environment for green technology – called Greentec. The Greentec industry should be the leading sector for the region within 15 years, which indeed was an ambitious goal. All their expectations were superseded. The region boomed and several high tech companies were willing to invest in the region, that made close cooperation across sectors a mantra. So business sector needs were addressed in the educational system, the public administration focused on supporting the initiatives instead of offering the usual bureaucracy and the business sectors put in the necessary resources to make the investments . All in all the results were amazing. Today the region is the second largest region for Greentec industry in North America. The region is called Oregon and is in constant development.

The story is true despite the headline – and I met the guy who initiated the process. A remarkable guy, who generously spent his time developing the idea with likeminded people.

He was such an inspiration for me, that I met with Martin Kviesgaard over lunch and coffee several times – and we decided that the time had come to start a similar, but smaller initiative in Greenland. That resulted in a range of meetings with likeminded people like Jens Andersen, Henrik Sørensen and Jesper Kreiner – and CSR-Greenland was created with the help of Anne Mette Christiansen. Today this initiative is well under way, but not nearly as focused as the Oregon initiative. But my guess is that we will get there. More bridges to build and fewer ditches to be digged. Now we have just revisited the vision of CSR Greenland – and the framework remains intact.

I hope you like the story,
