Making a difference

Once in a while I am considering future obligations, jobs or directions in my life. And every time I come back to one thing: it has to make sense in a bigger context. I want to make a difference in society, towards my colleagues, customers and first of all the Youth.

I think that I am one of those society consciencious people that thrieve when the going gets rough. I like that things are challenging and complex. Working in Greenland right now is both. There are SO MANY possibilities, obstacles and complexities that could last a lifetime of effort - and it suits me just fine. One of the great things of being in a developing country is that you can SEE and FEEL the difference you make. I sense a huge interest in going forward, but also a sense of lack of direction for change. Not just where to go - but also HOW to go there. I think finding out the WHERE comes first, then comes the WHY and then comes the HOW. Do you agree?

My last blog was about my personal vision for Greenland. I think moving forward I will focus even more on what I can do, not what others can do. I hope the word spread and that you also want to participate in this "new movement" of making a difference on a day to day basis. Do you want to come along on this journey of bigger empowerment and sense of obligation towards our society?

I want to contribute by changing the populations access to cheaper internet, connections to the world, engaging in the Youth through educational programs, blogging, helping young entrepreneurs (currently two teams), mentoring and building further on the platform of CSR Greenland (that I helped to found).

And you know what? I KNOW THAT IT MATTERS. So tell me your story and how you want to participate, okay?

The Future of Greenland

I have a vision - maybe a rather personal vision - of where the Greenlandic society will be 20 years from now.

I see a society with happy people, colourful multicultural people and well educated people. I see a society with no racism or discrimination due to gender, language, nationality, age or social background. I see a society with equal rights opportunities and enough jobs for everyone to be employed and providing for themselves and their families.

I also see a society where our politicians seriously work together across political views to find solutions that benefit Greenland as a whole and not just representing different political ideologies.

As you can read I have high hopes for my country and hope for a better and more sustainable future. So what needs to happen (change) in order to achieve my vision, you might ask?

First of all each individual needs to feel more responsible and feel thay they can make a difference for the benefit of themselves and the Greenlandic society. We need - as a country - to build SELFESTEEM AND SELFWORTH especially in the younger generations. Way to many youth have no goals or incitements to achieve in our current situation. To me it is essential to stimulate the youths dreams and aspirations to do well in life very early on. To take charge of their lives, dream high dreams, work hard in school, take longer educations AND SEE THAT IT MATTERS to make an effort.

Secondly you and I need to feel empowered. Empowerment is a powerful tool to move an entire population. Why do Japanese, Faroese or Icelanders do so well in school, business and life? They strive to achieve and are rewarded accordingly. We have a fundamental lack of willingness to achieve and work hard as a Nation. Do I sound harsh? Well, maybe. But I see so many youth NOT willing to work hard to achieve in Greenland - maybe things are coming to easy to them or they see no point?
A way to start could be to give more opportunities for those who strieve to achieve, who put in the effort and the hours. Special scholarships, higher demands in school, differentiation of education opportunities and closer follow-up on results.

Thirdly we need to grow our economy into being more independent of Denmark. And sadly it is a long, long journey and hard work that will take us there. Open up for foreign investments and let people actually MAKE money, so the business community can create more private sector jobs that will create more revenue and thus taxes. The public money is taking too much place in our economy. Set clear targets for lowering public spending (even cut staff!) and make it more proactive with programs that empower people to actually get a job and DEMAND that all youth under the age of 30 will have a job opportunity even if it means going back to elementary school levels. We can not afford an uneducated population.

I am no way a politician - merely a humble business person with a personal vision. But what do you think of it? Do you have any suggestions?

Racism at your work?

Uuuuh, an ugly word that most people resent. But nonetheless racism in many forms and shapes coexist with a lot of corporate cultures. It can be from small to big racism issues - some just pure discrimination, but then again racism and discrimination are to sides of the coin.

I have experienced workplaces where discrimination was top down. Where there was a fundamental lack of respect across different work functions. I have also experiences a workplace where language was a huge issue. Where it was not accepted that there ARE different cultures within a culture, and people should use the language they are comfortable with. Languages should be a strength - not an impediment. Discrimination at a workplace lowers the productivity and has a clear link to lack of respect for each other and each others differences. To me differences at my work is a clear strength and as long as there is respect, then you can make it ADD to productivity, not lessen it.

What do you think? Have you experienced racism or discrimination at your workplace?

And what can you and I do to have less racism/discrimination and more inclusion and respect?

Laws of attraction

These past few months I have experience quite a few situations meeting people that have impacted my life. One of them is from Bosnia with a fantastic personality that have Body-SDS as a profession - basically a mix between physiotherapy and psychotherapy with a huge focus on mind & body.  I came to know him over a period of three-four months and gradually we grew a friendship that I believe will last a lifetime - even though he recently moved to Denmark. The other person is this innovative, friendly, photoenthusiastic and visionary type that I accidently met through a photoproject of his. These two people, Daniel and Filip, came into my life at a time where I was open to new ideas, new concepts, a bigger selfunderstanding and a need for selfdevelopment. Both have impacted my life and the way I look upon things. And none of them I have known for very long.

What exactly have made this possible? I believe that laws of attraction work in a way where you attract exactly what energy you give out to the universe. Does this sound crazy? Well, more and more I believe in this strange concept of laws of attraction, where you DO attract the people, situations or even events that you a open to. Do you believe in laws of attraction? If you do, please share with me on this blog through a comment.
